Building Resilience: How to Help Kids with Tourette Syndrome Face the World Courageously

This is a presentation applicable to all children with challenges and learning differences.

William R. Stixrud, Ph.D., is a clinical neuropsychologist who has been in private practice since 1985. He is also a member of the Adjunct Faculty of the Children's National Medical Center, and he holds a faculty appointment as Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the George Washington School of Medicine.  He has previously held an appointment at the Georgetown University Medical School, and he has served as a consultant to the Division of Neuropsychology at the National Institutes of Health. Dr Stixrud is a frequent lecturer on topics related to neuropsychological assessment, learning and executive disorders, brain development, brain-based learning, motivation, and the effects of stress and sleep deprivation on the brain.  He is the author of the book, Plain Talk About Early Education and Development, and he has authored book chapters and/or articles on children with epilepsy, adolescent brain development, self-esteem, homework, and the effects of Transcendental Meditation on students with ADHD.

Directions to University of Maryland, College Park

From the Capital Beltway (I-495)

1.From I-495, take exit 25, "U.S. 1 South, College Park"
2.Proceed approximately two miles on U.S. Route 1 South
3.Turn right at the north entrance to UMd (first entrance), onto Campus Drive
4.Proceed to the traffic circle (there is a big “M” on the earth mound in the circle, if it is not snow covered)
5.Turn right at the circle to Regents Drive
6.On your left, pass the Geology building, a driveway, and the back of the Plant Sciences building, then immediately
7.Turn left to Fieldhouse Drive
8.Make an immediate right into the Regents Drive Parking Garage (#202 on map.)  Park in any UNNUMBERED parking space.
9.PLEASE NOTE: UNNUMBERED SPACES are FREE of charge on non-game Sundays.  DO NOT PARK IN NUMBERED SPACES where you must pay at the kiosk or you will be ticketed.)
10.Take the stairwell from the back of the garage (southwest corner.)  This is the corner that was on your left as you entered the garage.

Directions to the Biosciences Research Building from the Regents Garage

1.As you come out of the southwest corner stairwell of Regents Garage, look diagonally to your left across Field House Drive, and locate the large blue emergency phone pole by the sidewalk.
2.Cross the street to that pole.  Continue up that sidewalk and up the steps to Hornbake Plaza, a courtyard.
3.Turn right at the top of the steps into the plaza.
4.Pass the Biology-Psychology building on your right.
5.The Biosciences Research Building (#413 on map) is the next building on your right.  It is contiguous with the Bio-Psych building and has a circular portico at the entrance.
6.Inside, go to the right and through the double doors to the long, narrow atrium lobby.
7.The Biosciences Research Seminar Room, room1103 is at the rear of that lobby on the left hand side.
